Menu Editor

By using the SiteWizard Menu Editor you can create you very own custom menu structure with multi-tiered levels that allow you to group similar items together in one section on the menu bar. This then eradicates the need for over long navigation bars, which can make websites look messy.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Please Note that before you create your menu, we recommend you use the Page Names section of the editor to name your pages as well as give them all an Alternative HTML file name. Although you can adjust the menu items once they have been added, we believe doing it this way is a much more efficient way of working.

Using the Menu Editor with Internet Explorer 7

Because Internet Explorer 7 has tightened its security, you will need to customise its settings to enable you to use the Modify button in the Menu Editor's toolbar.

  1. Click on the Tools option in the Toolbar and select Internet Options in the pop-up menu.
  2. Click on the Security tab and then the Custom Level button.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the pop-up list and click Enable under the Allow websites to prompt for information using scripted windows option.
  4. Click Ok and then Ok again to apply these settings.

Adding An Existing Page To The Menu

Once you have named all your pages you can add them to your menu by following these simple steps:

  1. Using the drop-down box at the top of the screen, select the page you wish to add to the menu bar.
  2. Click on the ADD button and the page is included inside the SiteWizard Menu Designer box.
  3. Each subsequent page you select will be added to the end of the menu.

Manually Inserting An Item On The Menu

As well as using the drop-down menu to insert an item you can also manually add a link. This is a very handy tool for linking to other people's sites (e.g. Google) as well as referencing an Anchor on a specific page.

Adding a link to an external website

The SiteWizard Menu Editor allows you to add a link to somebody else's website that either opens in a new browser window or directs your site to theirs.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We recommend that when you link to an external site you always do this in a new window. This way the user can always come back to your site by closing down the new window.

  1. Type the name you wish to appear on the menu in the Menu Item box. e.g. Google.
  2. Type the domain name you wish to link to in the Link box. e.g. www.google.com.
  3. If you would like the site to open in a new browser window please add http:// before the www. Omitting this will make the site open in the same browser window as your own. e.g. http://www.google.com.
  4. Hit the ADD button to include the item on the menu.

Adding a link to a specific Anchor on a page

Before you add an Anchor link onto your menu, you need to create the Anchor points onto your web page. For more information on how to so this, please refer to Section Two of this guide.

  1. Type in the name of the link, as you wish it to appear on the menu, in the Menu Item box. e.g. Company Profile.
  2. Add the Alternative HTML name of the page that the Anchor link appears on into the Link box. e.g. about_us.htm.
  3. Now add a hash (#) on the end and then insert the name of the Anchor directly after. e.g. about_us.htm#profile.
  4. Hit the ADD button to include the item on the menu.

Changing The Position Of An Item On The Menu

Now that you have created your menu structure, you may feel that the order of your pages isn't quite right. By using the Move Up and Move Down buttons you can change the position a page link appears on your menu.

  1. In the SiteWizard Menu Designer box, click on the link you wish to move.
  2. Now depending on where you wish to move the link to, click on the Move Up or Move Down button.
  3. Continue clicking until the menu item is in the position you would like it to be.
  4. Repeat these steps until your menu is in the order you want.

Adding and Removing sub-levels to your menu

The SiteWizard menu system allows you to add sub-menus to your navigation system. This means that you can have extra menus showing up when the mouse hovers over specific items in the menu bar. It has also been designed so that you can have sub-menus coming off the sub-menus!

  1. Layout the menu as you wish it to appear on your site. Include all the elements that you wish to be added as a sub-menu items.
  2. Click on the link you wish to become a sub-menu item.
  3. Click on the + Sub Menu button. You will see that a symbol (>) has been added to the front of the item in the SiteWizard Menu Designer box.
  4. To remove this sub-menu just click on the - Sub Menu button and the symbol is removed.
  5. Repeat this process for as many sub-levels as you wish.
  6. To convert one of your sub-level items to a secondary sub-level item, just highlight the link and press the + Sub Menu button again so that two symbols appear (>>).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You cannot create a second level sub-menu without having a first level sub-menu before it. If you try to publish a menu where this occurs, the second level sub-menus will not be shown.

Modifying An Item In The Menu

If you have added a menu item and for some reason the content for that page has changed, the SiteWizard Menu Editor allows you to edit both the page name as it appears on the menu and the alternative HTML name.

If you are using Internet Explorer 7 to edit your menu then please see the section at the top of this page entitled Using the Menu Editor with Internet Explorer 7 as its security settings will need to be modified.

  1. Click on the menu item you wish to modify and hit the Modify button.
  2. A pop-up box will appear that asks you to modify the menu text of the selected item.
  3. Once you have done this click OK.
  4. A second pop-up box will appear that will ask you to modify the alternative HTML file name.
  5. Once you have done this click OK.
  6. The menu item should now have been modified to your new specification.

Deleting An Item In The Menu

  1. Select the item you wish to remove.
  2. Hit the red Delete Item button and you will see that the item has been removed from the SiteWizard Menu Designer box.

Once you have created and edited your menu structure the last thing you need to do is hit the Save Changes button so that all your amendments are finalised. If you would like to abandon your changes at any point, just hit the Cancel Changes button.
